The most important Questions you can ask are:

Which level of stylist do I want to pick or how much experience do I require?

This is a hard question really and I will do my best to enlighten you on this choice although ultimately it is your decision.

First lets discuss the different levels

Junior Stylist: This is someone who is generally still heavily in the learning curve and who has basic knowledge of hair design and structure. They are not in a position to truly understand all types of hair or related issues. Not because they do not want to but because they have not had they experience or time necessary to give them this insight. They can cut and probably color but without the insight or visualization of the actual result.

Stylist: This level is the largest area of our business. It compromises people who have been in the business for a few years to long term. It is an area that you will provide you with the stability of some experience without stepping up to a higher price structure. Most stylists can accomplish the general steps needed to provide you with a competent result. This area may or may not have the insight to develop personalized concepts. Meaning you may get something tailored to you and your needs or you may get just what they know how to do and no more.

Senior Stylist: At this level we are generally speaking about years of experience when we say Senior. This is someone who has generally been in the business for at least 6 to 10 years or more and is versed in all aspects of design. They tend to have good insight as to what a client not only wants but also needs as it relates to features and lifestyle.

Artistic Director, Educational Director: This is the rarest of levels in the business and is held out exclusively for those who have usually well over ten years experience in the industry. At this level you are working with someone who lives their career and understands every aspect of design and creative process. They generally have years both behind the chair and in a multitude of other areas such as Session work ( runway, photo), Education, management, Product development etc. At this level you will find that you can put yourself fully in their hands without worry. Directors will provide you with not only experience but with the insight to blend your hair into a total package that accentuates you and your lifestyle.

So, what’s the real difference?

Experience! Experience! And Experience! Yes, the first levels do charge a bit less but remember, your image and especially your hair, is the most important part of your appearance. Most people would not dare price shop for surgery or an investment broker, your image is equally important.

Whatever your choice be very clear about your wants, needs and expectations. You are after all the Client and you need to feel comfortable with the results.
